Hude University, a Sign-Off and a Lifeguard: The Story Behind Our Designs
Our Baywatch Berlin collection is small, four designs, and each one is an in-joke from the podcast. Here's the story behind each, so you can find the piece that fits you.
Why do listeners say Hude?
In May 2024, Klaas Heufer-Umlauf went skydiving in Ganderkesee, near Oldenburg. Back on the podcast, we laughed about the place names nearby, and Klaas said that Hude, the neighbouring municipality, sounds like a Norwegian greeting. The joke stuck and Hude became a greeting, on the podcast and beyond. The mayors of Hude, Ganderkesee and Delmenhorst even answered with a podcast of their own.
What is Hude University?
There isn't one. In October 2024, Klaas wore a grey college sweatshirt reading HUDE UNIVERSITY on Late Night Berlin, with Hude's coat of arms on it. Thomas liked that it works like a secret: to most people it looks like a university sweatshirt, and only listeners know it's Baywatch Berlin.
- Hude University: arched HUDE letters over a laurel-wrapped crest with Hude's ruined monastery church and windmill sails, all in white, with the BAYWATCH BERLIN wordmark on the back.
- Hude University Blue: the same crest and back wordmark in deep navy, like a classic college sweatshirt.
The mock Latin beside the crest, OMNIA AMORIS. and OMNIA BONI., reads roughly "all of love, all of good".
What does Alles Liebe. Alles Gute. mean?
"All the love. All the best." It's how every episode ends. Our Alles Liebe Alles Gute design has the wordmark on the front and the line in big white letters on the back.
And the lifeguard?
Lifeguard leans into the name: a full-colour photo of a grinning lifeguard in red, rescue can on his shoulder, over yellow brush-script BAYWATCH lettering.
